Britain's most famous store Harrods features on many tourist 'must-see' lists - and with good reason. Its humble beginnings date back to 1849, when Henry Charles Harrod opened a small grocery shop that emphasised impeccable service over value. Today, it occupies a vast site in London's fashionable Knightsbridge and boasts a phenomenal range of products from pianos and cooking pans to pets and perfumery. The store is well served with restaurants. At Christmas time, Harrods boasts an enchanting Santa's Grotto for the kids and an extensive range of festive decorations. The summer and winter sales are calendar events in the shopping year.

Petticoat Lane

Probably one of the oldest of all London's street markets, established over 400 years ago when petticoats were sold here. Despite attempts to close down the market it is still flourishing and always crowded. Petticoat Lane Market is home to more than 1,000 stalls selling mainly y clothes and household goods. You can find cheap leather wear at the Aldgate East end.

Oxford Street
Oxford Street is one and a half miles end to end. Most shops open 10am until 6 or 7pm. Some open Sunday 12 to 6pm with late nights on Thursday. Oxford Street is best known for Selfridges and the other big department stores which are all found in the section from Marble Arch to Oxford Circus, along with most of the big-name multinationals. It's more of the same as you continue towards Tottenham Court Road, but generally on a smaller scale. Oxford Street claims to be the busiest street in Europe.
Slip into a side street, however, and it's pretty easy to leave the crowds behind. Check out St Christopher's Place, South Molton Street and Berwick Street for some real treats.

Selfridges
Selfridges at Oxford Street is a huge (it just goes on and on) store for the highend shopper. The store has six floors offering ten acres of shopping space, eleven places to eat, two exhibition halls and countless services. Everyone from Stella McCartney to Dior is here. They also have personal shopping for those who don't like to wander round the store, of course for an extra charge though.
